Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon. The achilles tendon is named after the Greek mythological figure “Achilles” who was invulnerable to any injury except if this large tendon was injured. The achilles tendon is a large tendon that attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. If torn, it can lead to several months of inactivity after surgery. Achilles tendonitis often causes pain and swelling around the affected tendon. Causes of this injury include excessive running, jumping, backpedaling, and or fast twitchy movements commonly seen in basketball, lacrosse, soccer or football. Common symptoms include mild aching in the back of the leg or above the heel after running or sports activities. More severe pain may occur after prolonged running, stair climbing, or sprinting. If you experience persistent pain around the Achilles tendon, it’s essential to consult a professional for an evaluation. At Laser Center of Louisville, we commonly treat injuries related to all types of tendonitis. Our class IV laser has specific protocols to decrease inflammation, increase blood flow and decrease pain. Contact us today for a complimentary evaluation and treatment!
