Osteoarthritis is inflammation of the joints that comes from years of wear and tear. Most people experience OA in their hands, wrists, elbows, or the knees.  For example, life long tennis players can develop OA in their elbows or wrists etc. When bones come together to form joints, the ends are covered with a Teflon-like covering called articular cartilage. This cartilage, over several years of rubbing and grinding together can break down, causing the cartilage to to rub on the other end of the joint and not the corresponding cartilage.

Over time this covering may gradually wear down, and if the joint is injured with trauma the process can be greatly accelerated. When the covering is destroyed, bone rubs on bone, which is very painful, and the pain can be so intense it inspires you to quit moving the joint, but only by moving the joint will the pain dissipate because by moving the joint it lubricates the joint. OA is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is very common. Here at Laser Center of Louisville, our class IV Summus laser has specific settings and protocol for OA.
