Degenerative disk disease (DDD) is a common spinal condition that affects many people worldwide. In fact, it is so common that virtually all persons over the age of 40 have some form of this condition. This condition is caused by normal wear and tear within the discs that are between the spinal bones in your back. These discs degenerate causing the spinal bones to become closer together. Your body can’t reproduce the disc but to compensate it lays down a bonier type of matrix in the area of the prior disc that is more prone to injuries and pain. There are risk factors associated with degenerative disc disease, such as obesity, persons that have sustained acute injuries, smoking, having a physically demanding job, and women are also more prone to this condition. Common symptoms associated with DDD are pain, numbness and tingling in the arms, hands, legs or feet. Also, in some cases, radiating pain in the shoulders, buttocks and legs can occur. At Laser Center of Louisville, our Summus class IV laser has specific protocols and settings to target the site of degeneration and increase blood flow to the area and decrease scar tissue that is causing pain.
